Since 2004 BMW has been producing the 1 Series which is a small family car, it was originally designed to replace the 3 series compact – which the hatchback variants have done. Up until 2007 there was only a 5 door hatchback version of the 1 series, now there is a coupe, convertible and 3 door hatchback.
Initially the 1 series shared many of its components with the 3 series, which was moved gradually up market. With the Mini as BMW’s super mini it was decided the new 1 series should and would be marketed in between the Mini and the 3 series.
The 1 series comes with a choice of many engine variants:
• 1.6 Litre petrol – 120 or 141bhp output
• 2.0 Litre petrol – 168bhp output
• 2.0 Litre Diesel – 114, 141, 174 or 202bhp output
The diesel line up is very strong; the 2.0 litre petrol is very smooth but, unfortunately the 1.6 litre petrol seems under powered.
When driving the BMW 1 Series you get the impression it was built with twisty country roads in mind, the ride feels overly firm on normal roads but on a twisty road the 1 series really does impress. It has superb body control, loads of grip and a balanced feel provided by the front-engine, rear-wheel-drive chassis.
For a used BMW 1 Series in Croydon drop by McCarthy Cars’ showrooms in Clapham and Croydon, they have a good selection of used BMWs in stock.
