At the Shanghai Auto Show this week Audi will be taking the wraps of the Audi A3 e-tron concept car. The A3 concept is a four-seat notchback saloon which features new technologies such as the MMI infotainment system, driver aid systems and plug-in hybrid engine technology.
The A3 e-tron is powered by two power sources, a 211PS 1.4 TFSI four-cylinder engine with turbo charging and petrol direct injection and an electric motor with an output of 27PS. Combined it has a power output of 238 PS and can do 0-62mph in just 6.8 seconds.
Audi has fitted lithium-ion batteries behind the rear seats in the A3 e-tron; the batteries have a charge capacity of 12 kWh enabling the concept to do 34 miles on electric power alone. Like most plug in hybrids the A3 e-tron can be fully charge via a domestic 3 pin plug socket, adding great flexibility of city driving.
To facilitate the two power sources there are also two transmission structures operated by two clutches. Gears are alternatively shifted by the two clutches quickly, smoothly and without any noticeable interruption of traction.
On the inside the Audi concept has no tachometer; instead it has a "power meter" with a needle which indicates the total system output on a scale of 0 to 100%. The centre console features four large round air vents, reminiscent of a jet's design, which can be adjusted by pushing and pulling on the centre axis of the vents.
Audi has been able to make the A3 e-tron practical too; it features a luggage compartment volume of 410 litres and low loading lip. During the official unveiling there may be some indication as to whether this concept will go into production and be on sale at Preston Audi or not.
