If like me you grew up in the 90s then you’ll know what a motoring icon the VW Golf was, or even is. It was the car to have; it was the perfect hot hatch in GTI trim. The Golf set the benchmark for other hatchbacks to follow, whether it is performance, practicality or reliability the Golf was always on top. Unfortunately it was also on top of the must have list for car thieves.
Even if you could afford a Golf you would have a torrid time trying to get it insured, insurers were reluctant to insure them because they knew thieves wanted them. I wanted my first car to be a Golf but because of the insurance quotes I had to abandon that idea! Over the years VW has increased the standard security equipment in all Golfs, the high end R32 even comes with a tracker fitted.
Rather than just a hot hatch and a boy racer car the Golf has established itself as a reputable medium sized family car. It’s not just young lads looking for a Volkswagen Golf for sale these days! The new Golf is still as practical, reliable and great to drive as the models from the 1990s.
In recognition of its contribution to the lower medium car sector, Fleet World has given the Golf the honour of “Best Lower Medium Car of 2011”. The trophy was collected by Lee Rabjohn, Volkswagen's Regional Fleet Manager at the Royal Automobile Club in London.
Lee Rabjohn commented: "I'm delighted to receive this award on behalf of the brand. The Golf has long been a fleet stalwart - and it's a huge credit to the car that it continues to win awards such as this. Vehicles that appeal to drivers and fleet managers in equal measure are not easy to find, but the Golf consistently remains one such car."
